Pricing Guardrails
The published bounds within which a deal may be shaped and priced without escalation. Guardrails sit on all three pricing decisions, not on the discount alone. On licensing they say which value metric and which units a quote may count for a given customer group. On packaging they say which editions, add-ons and bundles may be combined, and which may not. On pricing they set the ceiling and floor per customer group, the limits of the discount waterfall, the term and payment conditions that may move, and the transition rules for customers on an older architecture. Approval thresholds are the escalation path for a deal that needs to leave the bounds, and they are the small part of the design; the larger part is the set of deals that never need one because the bounds were drawn from the customer groups in the first place. Guardrails live on the decision layer that the CRM, quoting and billing systems integrate with, so a quote cannot leave the surface silently and the realized price record stays readable.
